Sun Devil Classic in Tribute to Hannah Henry

Athletes,

Due to recent heavy rainfall and water release flowing through Tempe Town Lake, the lake has been closed to all water activities. Water-quality testing completed today following last weekend’s storms also confirmed that conditions do not meet the standards for a safe swim. As a result, the Head Official has determined that the Sun Devil Classic will proceed as a duathlon, and Aquabike athletes will complete the bike only.

We understand that many of you were looking forward to the swim, and we know this is not the news you hoped for. The water conditions are beyond our control, and we must follow the lake closure and put everyone’s safety first.

Revised format

-Duathlon (all triathlon athletes): 1.6 km run, 20 km bike, 5 km run. Mass start at 7:30 a.m.

-Aquabike athletes: 20 km bike only. Mass start at 7:35 a.m.

Team USA qualification: All Team USA qualifications for triathlon and Aquabike remain the same.

We are working through the course adjustments, and updated course maps will be shared as soon as they are finalized.

USA TRIATHLON

The Sun Devil Classic in Tribute to Hannah Henry is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT), the governing body of multisport in North America. One of the many roles played by USAT is that of insurance provider for this race. As such USAT requires that every participant be either (1) an annual member, or (2) purchase a one-day membership. Memberships can be purchased during online registration.

QUALIFING FOR WORLDS

TRIATHLON

Age Group Team USA qualification spots will be awarded to the top 18 athletes per gender (based on remaining available spots) in each five-year age group, earning them the opportunity to race the Draft Legal Sprint Triathlon at the 2027 Age Group World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. Please note that athletes must be at least 16 years old on 12/31/27 to be eligible for selection.

AQUABIKE

Age Group Team USA qualification spots will be awarded to the top 18 athletes per gender (based on remaining available spots) in each five-year age group, earning them the opportunity to race the Standard Aquabike at the 2027 Age Group World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. Please note that athletes must be at least 16 years old on 12/31/27 to be eligible for selection.

Please note there is no parking directly at the race site. All parking is at least a 1/2 mile walk/ride to/from the race site. Be aware of bike course traffic closures and plan accordingly.

Saturday, November 7 – At the race site

1500 – 1700: Sun Devil Classic athlete check in*

1600 – 1630: Sun Devil Classic athlete briefing

*Athletes must pick up their own packets and show I.D.

Sunday, November 8 – At the race site

0530 – 0645: Transition open and athlete check in

0715 – Transition closes, national anthem and pre-race briefing at swim start

0730 – Duathlon start all athletes

0735 – Aquabike start all athletes

0930 – Collegiate club awards

0940 – Men’s awards

0950 – Women’s awards

*Athletes must pick up their own packets and show I.D.

Please note that (a) this race is draft legal and aerobars are not allowed, and (b) age will be calculated as of 12/31/2026

RACE TIMING

This event will be chip timed by 4 Peaks Racing using triathlon chips. Lost or unreturned chips will be charged to the athlete. Chips should be worn on your left ankle, worn from start to finish and must be returned at the finish line. Please DO NOT cut the provided neoprene strap.
